Chiropractic Care Q & A

by David N. Adler, DC

Why should I consider chiropractic care?

Your spine serves as the central area of your body that your nerves travel through to deliver messages. When you have a problem with the way your spine is aligned, this disrupts these messages, resulting in pain and irritation in certain parts of your body. Medication only relieves your symptoms temporarily, but it doesn’t correct spinal problems, which means you’ll keep experiencing pain.

What benefits does chiropractic care provide?

Although he provides care for several conditions that cause ongoing pain and stiffness, his treatments go beyond simply treating or managing symptoms. Instead, these chiropractic treatments directly address the underlying source that’s causing these symptoms, leading to long-lasting relief and a reduced risk of having them return. Dr. Adler offers chiropractic care that includes individualized treatment based on each patient’s needs. In fact, his chiropractic adjustments that take full advantage of your body’s ability to heal itself when it’s properly aligned. What kinds of conditions does chiropractic care help? Chiropractic care can ease pain and promote recovery and healing for many conditions. Some common types of conditions that Dr. Adler sees patients for include:
  • Spinal disc problems, such as a herniated disc or bulging disc
  • Lower back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Sports injuries, such as tennis elbow and muscle sprains and strains
  • Repetitive stress injuries from overuse, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Headaches, including migraines
  • Discomfort associated with pregnancy, such as back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Neck pain
  • Knee pain
  • Hip pain
  • Pain in the extremities

What can I expect from chiropractic care?

Chiropractic Rehabilitation

When you have pain from an injury or a condition that affects your spine or other joints, it’s important to go through chiropractic rehabilitation in order to recover and regain flexibility. Chiropractic rehabilitation provides an effective way for your body to gradually heal while gaining strength and an improved range of motion. At Adler Family Chiropractic, Dr. David Adler offers chiropractic rehabilitation to patients and families in Roswell, Georgia who have spinal problems.

Chiropractic Rehabilitation Q & A

by David N. Adler, DC

How is chiropractic rehabilitation different from physical therapy?

When you undergo physical therapy for chronic or persistent pain, you typically learn to do standard sets of exercises that are meant to increase muscle strength and flexibility. Although this might seem helpful at first glance, it’s not targeted enough to ensure that your body heals. With chiropractic rehabilitation, Dr. Adler creates a detailed treatment plan with spinal rehab exercises that address your specific needs. This helps your body heal while also reducing the risk of causing additional irritation as physical therapy exercises can do.

When should I start chiropractic rehabilitation?

This depends on the source of your pain, how long you’ve had it, and its severity. Dr. Adler will perform a thorough evaluation to uncover these factors and let you know when you should begin chiropractic rehabilitation. However, doing repetitive rehab too early can make your condition worse. Dr. Adler knows that, which is why he creates a treatment plan for rehabilitation that gently promotes natural healing instead of having you do challenging exercises that could strain your muscles or irritate your nerves.

What does chiropractic rehabilitation include?

Dr. Adler offers chiropractic rehabilitation to all of his patients to help them make a full recovery and return to their usual activities. As part of this rehab program, you can expect to do specific exercises that are designed to help you achieve optimal results. The exact exercises you’ll engage in depend on the type of injury or damage you have and what’s causing it.

How long does chiropractic rehabilitation last?

Dr. Adler focuses on promoting your body’s natural healing abilities, which are linked to your nervous system. This involves having you do exercises that gradually help you get better. This allows your body to ease into the healing process and recover at a healthy pace, which reduces the risk of having your condition become worse. With that being said, the duration of your chiropractic rehabilitation program depends on how bad your pain is, how severe the underlying cause of it is, and how long you’ve had it. Dr. Adler will let you know roughly how long the rehab process will take based on your evaluation. If you need chiropractic rehabilitation, please contact Adler Family Chiropractic to set up an appointment with Dr. Adler.

Chiropractic Care After an Auto Accident

The screeching tires that fill your nose with that burnt rubber smell. The twisted metal and broken glass strewn about. The worried onlookers and flashing lights of first responders.

Being in a car accident is a traumatic experience mentally, and almost always physically, too. That damage isn’t absorbed by your car alone. Your body – mostly your spine and other joints – absorb the trauma, too. And the damage may not always show up immediately like with your car. Most people will find their way to an emergency room following the crash, where they will be evaluated for emergency type conditions: internal bleeding, concussions, broken bones. They may give you a prescription for some pain killers, too. But what if you receive a clean bill of health from them? Do you think those pain killers get rid of the cause of your pain? What about the treatment of those underlying reasons for that neck pain? That back pain? That knee pain? That’s where Dr. Adler and his staff at Adler Family Chiropractic can help. “Unfortunately, the misconception is out there that little damage to the car equals little damage to you. That’s not true, and it’s one of the reasons some of these injuries aren’t diagnosed right away,” says Dr. Adler. “Chiropractic care after an auto accident can help you recover from those hidden, underlying injuries without drugs or surgery.” A detailed chiropractic examination by Dr. Adler will help get you back on the road to recovery. And the sooner you make the decision to let us help, the better your chances to heal faster, and more successfully. Dr. Adler is currently accepting new patients who have been involved in auto accidents in Roswell, Cumming, Norcross, Johns Creek, Alpharetta, and the rest of North Fulton County, GA.  Click here to schedule your appointment.

Questions and Answers about Chiropractic Care after Auto Accidents

by David N. Adler, DC Before we can answer any questions, there are some terms you need to know. Dr. Adler specializes in the detection and correction of the “Vertebral Subluxation Complex.” Vertebral subluxation is a condition where spinal vertebrae are not in the correct alignment and create changes in the ability of the nervous system to communicate with the rest of the body clearly both from the brain to the body and the body back to the brain. This causes a less than optimal function and adaptability of the body.

What kinds of auto accident injuries can a chiropractor treat?

Dr. Adler encourages anyone who has been in a motor vehicle accident to get examined as soon possible, regardless of the severity of damage to the car, or your current level of pain. “When you’re involved in a car accident, you can’t believe the way your body is thrown around – and that’s even at low speeds. This can result in whiplash, severe neck pain, decreased range of motion, headaches, and plenty of other conditions”, says Dr. Adler.

Why do I need a chiropractic evaluation if I went to the ER for care?

When you visit the ER after being in an auto accident, the medical professionals who take care of you are trained to treat your symptoms and insure that you are not in a life or death situation. This usually involves giving you pain medications to ease discomfort, but that doesn’t treat the actual injury. It simply masks it.  Dr. Adler performs a thorough evaluation that helps him determine the source of your injury, so he can come up with a treatment plan that enables your body’s natural healing abilities to take effect.

What happens if I don’t seek care for my injury right away?

There are often times when a seemingly small car accident leaves no damage on your car. You might be tempted to simply go home, or perhaps the ER or your primary physician. However, you’d run the risk of having your injury cause permanent damage if your body doesn’t heal properly. This can lead to chronic pain and/or stiffness that limits your ability to do your regular activities, as well as possible permanent disability to your spine and nervous system. In addition to going to the ER and following your physician’s instructions, a full chiropractic exam and treatment plan is necessary for achieving proper healing.

How can chiropractic care help auto accident injuries?

Dr. Adler makes adjustments to your spine, and often your extremities in order to ensure that the body is able to heal itself optimally. All functions of the body are controlled and coordinated by the nervous system, and it is imperative that these nerve channels stay clear, so that the body can begin to heal itself. Those are the types of things only a chiropractor can help you with following your accident – no matter how mild or severe it was. If you need treatment for an auto accident injury, please contact Adler Family Chiropractic to make an appointment with Dr. Adler.  Dr. Adler accepts patients from all over the Atlanta area including Roswell, Sandy Springs, Johns Creek, Cumming, and Norcross.  Click here to schedule your appointment.

Headache Specialist

Headaches. The name really doesn’t do them justice. An intense sensitivity to light and sound. Sharp, stabbing pain in your skull. Blurred vision and even nausea... These are just some of the symptoms Dr. Adler sees. And it’s very important to understand that headaches are not normal, despite how common they are.  Dr. Adler specializes in Chiropractic care for headaches. Serious headaches are caused by a variety of things - muscle tension in the region, altered blood and nerve flow, and subluxations. Sure, those pills you have in your medicine cabinet might make them feel like they’ve gone away, but are you eliminating the cause of the headache to prevent it from coming back? Are you aware of the effects of those pills on the rest of your body? "Even after 28 years of taking care of patients, I’m still shocked when patient’s utter ‘I get normal headaches, Doc.’ I usually follow that up with ‘When are headaches ever normal?” says Dr. David Adler. “Just think about them for a second. Does it seem normal for a part of your body to ache and pound and throb out of nowhere?” Dr. Adler believes strongly in patient education, so that you know what he’s doing and why he’s doing it. One thing he’s noticed is how surprised some patients are when he tells them nearly 20% of headaches are “cervicogenic;” meaning they start in the neck and upper back. At Adler Family Chiropractic, we provide chiropractic care for headaches that treat the cause of the headaches - not the headaches themselves. By eliminating the cause, we’re able to reduce the severity of your headaches, or sometimes, get rid of them completely. Dr. David Adler is currently accepting new headache patients in Roswell, Alpharetta, Marietta, Johns Creek, Cumming and all of North Fulton County, Georgia.  Click here to schedule an appointment today.

Questions and Answers about Headaches

What kind of headache might I have?

Headaches are not all the same, and it’s important to know that. Some affect certain areas of your head, while the pain from others is more widespread and can travel into the neck, face and even shoulders. Some headaches flare up from specific triggers and cause sharp pain, and can last a few minutes. Others cause a dull ache, but last for hours. Some common types of headaches include:
  • Cervicogenic headaches, that usually affect multiple regions and stem from the neck and upper back.
  • Tension headaches, that usually affect the top of your head and temples, especially toward the end of the day.
  • Cluster headaches, that usually affect one side or one part of your head.
  • Migraines, that typically occur on one side and cause severe pain that can last for hours.
  • And many more …

How does chiropractic care help reduce headaches?

Chiropractic adjustments bring your spine back into its proper alignment. When you have problems with your upper spine, this can put pressure on the nerves in this area, triggering headaches. Dr. Adler provides chiropractic care for headaches by analyzing your spine to check for alignment, motion and strength, and apply specific adjustments to correct what isn’t working properly.

What causes frequent headaches?

You can get headaches on a regular basis for many reasons. Physical trauma, emotional stress, and chemical toxins are major factors. One of the newer common causes of recurring headaches is what’s known as ‘text neck.’ This occurs when you have your head bent at an angle for long periods of time while using your phone or typing on a tablet, laptop, or computer. And in this day and age, who isn’t? You can also get headaches from chronic stress or from underlying health conditions, such as high blood pressure. There are also headaches that occur with no evident cause.

What is text neck?

Text neck refers to the pain and discomfort you experience in your neck and head from keeping your head bent while texting or looking at your phone or other handheld devices. When you keep your head in this position for long periods of time or on a frequent basis, it can affect the upper part of your spine and irritate the nerves in your neck and head. Dr. Adler predicts that many of our teenagers and children will begin to see problems in their necks; things like herniated discs and arthritic changes at a very young age. Shoulder complaints, upper back pain and stiffness, and upper extremity problems will begin to show up much earlier than in previous generations as a result. Dr. Adler eases this discomfort and prevents it from coming back by correcting spinal subluxations in your upper spine. If you need chiropractic care for headaches, please contact Adler Family Chiropractic to make an appointment with Dr. Adler.

Neck and Shoulder Pain

Neck and shoulder pain are a daily annoyance that so many people suffer with..  but first a quick lesson in mythology!  According to the Ancient Greeks, Atlas led a rebellion against the god Zeus, and as punishment, was forced to literally hold the world on his neck and shoulders. He is also the namesake for the top-most vertebrae in your spine. C1, or Atlas as it is also known. While you may not have that hard a job, your neck and shoulders are under a tremendous amount of stress and pressure. Your neck is responsible for holding up your head and brain, allowing you all sorts of ranges of motion so you can see your surroundings, it is the attachment site for large muscles and the upper extremities, not to mention countless other things that can all lead to pain and discomfort. And we rarely do it any favors. “Think about the way you sleep. The way you lay on the couch. The way you hunch over to text with the phone in your lap..." says Dr. David Adler.  "A few pills for the pain is only masking the problem." In addition to physical activities, your neck and shoulders contain a tremendous amount of the nerves in the body. Physical and emotional stress can weigh on you. Poor posture can have an effect. The current epidemic of “Text Neck” is just starting to reveal itself. And most people just disregard it and go on with their day, accepting that pain. In some cases, Dr. Adler may need to order special tests, like an MRI or CT.  When these cases do arise, he has working relationships with his medical colleagues, and often co-manages these cases with them. At Adler Family Chiropractic, Dr. David Adler is accepting new patients with neck and shoulder pain in Roswell, Alpharetta, Marietta, Johns Creek, Cumming and all of North Fulton County, Georgia.  Click here to make an appointment today.

Neck & Shoulder Pain: Questions and Answers

by David N. Adler, DC Before we can answer any questions about neck and shoulder pain, there are some terms you need to know.

What causes neck and shoulder pain?

It’s very common to get neck and shoulder pain when there’s too much pressure on the nerves in the upper spine. Subluxation of the upper vertebrae – the cervical region – is often the cause of localized pain in the region, or even radiating pain all over the body. You could also be experiencing stiffness and discomfort in these areas if you have arthritis, or another condition that causes joint inflammation. There may be an old injury that has slowly been affecting your neck and/or shoulders, too. An old car accident. A violent sports hit. A slip and fall.

What are common symptoms of neck and shoulder pain?

Pain is itself a symptom for Dr. Adler to use in identifying and correcting your particular problem. Most people will seek our help when the pain in the neck or shoulder is a sharp sensation, that gets worse when you turn your head or lift your arm. This happens if your movements irritate the nerves in the area. You might also have a duller, less severe pain, but persists over an extended period of time. Sometimes the pain comes on after staying in the same position for too long, which can strain the muscles of your neck and upper back. Other patients come in unable to sleep at night. Whatever it is that you’re dealing with, Dr. Adler has seen it in his 28 years of experience. And he will take all your symptoms into consideration, while evaluating you to determine the underlying cause of your neck or shoulder pain.

What is “Text Neck” and why should I worry?

“Text Neck” refers to the pain and discomfort you experience in your neck and head from keeping your head bent while texting or looking at your phone, or other handheld devices. When you keep your head in this position for long periods of time or on a frequent basis, it can affect the upper part of your spine and irritate the nerves in your neck and head. We see changes in posture over time, as well. The slouched, forward shoulders and jutting chin. Dr. Adler eases this discomfort and prevents it from coming back by correcting spinal subluxations in your upper spine.

How does Dr. Adler treat neck and shoulder pain?

Dr. Adler performs chiropractic adjustments that correct misalignments in your upper spine. He is also an advanced extremity adjuster, meaning he can – and will – adjust the joints in your shoulders, clavicles and elbows, if they need to be. Putting things “back into place” helps relieve stress and tension on nerves, which will often ease your pain and lower the risk of it recurring. Dr. Adler will also show you exercises and stretches that help your body heal itself naturally. If you need treatment for neck or shoulder pain, please contact Adler Family Chiropractic to set up an appointment with Dr. Adler.
