Scoliosis Care

Chiropractic care is all about active care,
not a “wait and see approach”

Chiropractic care is proactive, especially when it comes to treating scoliosis, a condition characterized by abnormal curvatures in the spine. At Adler Comprehensive Chiropractic in Roswell, GA, we understand that scoliosis isn’t just a curve—it’s a complex condition that affects the body’s overall posture and health. Unlike the typical ‘wait and see’ approach in traditional non-chiropractic scoliosis care, we employ an active and immediate strategy to manage and treat scoliosis.

The spine naturally has certain curves that are essential for balance and proper posture, such as the ‘lordosis’ in the neck and lower back, and the ‘kyphosis’ in the mid-back and tailbone. These are beneficial curves that help withstand daily stress and maintain alignment. However, scoliosis represents an unwanted deviation that can disrupt this balance, presenting not only aesthetic concerns but also potential complications to overall health.

Dr. David Adler emphasizes the importance of early detection and intervention: “The standard non-chiropractic approach to scoliosis might seem to rely on waiting, but here at Adler Comprehensive Chiropractic, we begin with a thorough examination followed by hands-on treatments tailored specifically to address and correct the curvature.” Our scoliosis care aims not just to stop the progression of the curve but to improve it, using techniques that are backed by research and proven to be effective.

Waiting to see how scoliosis develops can lead to worsening conditions, including severe posture issues and pain. In more advanced cases, untreated scoliosis can even impact the heart and lungs. That’s why early and active treatment is crucial. Our clinic provides specialized scoliosis care designed to manage and potentially reverse the effects of scoliosis, improving patients’ quality of life.

Adler Comprehensive Chiropractic proudly serves patients from Roswell, Marietta, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Cumming, and all of North Fulton County, GA. We are currently accepting new scoliosis patients and invite you to schedule an appointment today to take the first step towards a straighter, healthier spine.

Q & A about Scoliosis

by David N. Adler, DC

Before we can answer any questions, there are some terms you need to know. Dr. Adler specializes in the detection and correction of the “Vertebral Subluxation Complex.” Vertebral subluxation is a condition where spinal vertebrae are not in the correct alignment and create changes in the ability of the nervous system to communicate with the rest of the body clearly both from the brain to the body and the body back to the brain. This causes a less than optimal function and adaptability of the body.

Scoliosis is defined as an abnormal lateral or sideways development / adaptation of the spine. These side way movements can be a just a few degrees (less than 20) to significant (more than 20 degrees). Some scoliosis cases are hereditary, and are more often seen in girls. Other causes can include trauma and are compensatory. These are usually found following accidents, birth trauma, etc.but can only be caused simply by poor posture, or daily, repetitive motions.

The chiropractic approach to scoliosis is a hands-on one. Examining and analyzing the spine, chiropractors will adjust the subluxations of the spine, and also assign corrective exercises. Of course, this will include monitoring of the spine but the most important distinction is that care is active and ongoing. The conventional, non-chiropractic approach includes a base line x-ray evaluation followed by a “wait and see how bad it gets” attitude that can allow the condition to worsen, create more imbalance and pain, and could end in surgery.

“The scoliosis screening at our local schools can be a great first step, but if the person doing the screening isn’t a medical doctor or a chiropractor – and they rarely are – then you could have gotten an incorrect diagnosis, or a missed finding. There is too much uncertainty and waiting when it comes to scoliosis treatments outside the chiropractic office. Why wait and see? Come in and be seen!”,  Dr. Adler says.

The screening for a scoliosis is straight-forward, and even something you can do at home. Look at your child from the back. Are the shoulders even? Does one scapula (wing bone) stick out more than the other? Do the spinous processes (the bony dots on the back of the spine) go straight, or do they shift from the center?

To further assess: Have your child stand straight up, and look at their spine. See if you can identify any of the findings discussed in the previous paragraph. Then, have your child bend forward and try to touch their toes, and see if anything shifts or humps in the lower back or upper back. You can also look to see if the fingertips are even when they bend over fully.

If any of these signs are present or if you are unsure then a call to our office would be the best first step.

The screening for a scoliosis is quite straightforward. Look at your child from the back. Are the shoulders even? Does one scapula (wing bone) stick out more than the other? Do the spinous processes (bony dots on the back of the spine) go straight or do they shift from the center?

The standard tests done a school scoliosis screening is also easily done at home. Have your child stand straight up and look at the spine. See if you see any of the findings discussed in the previous paragraph. Then the next step is to have your child bend forward and check their spines for any shifting or humps in the lower back or upper back. You can also look to see if the fingertips are even when they bend over fully. If any of these signs are present or if you are unsure then a call to our office would be the best first step.
